FAQs
Can I book an initial consultation session?
Yes! Olive Branch Counselling believes finding the right fit in a counselling relationship is an important first step in the counselling journey. Therefore, we offer a 15 minute initial consultation for free via telephone or video in order to determine whether to move forward with a formal session. We will also try to answer any questions you may have during this time.
Is what we talk about confidential?
Yes, in most cases what is discussed during sessions remains completely confidential, however, there are limits to confidentiality and guidelines for sharing information. We are bound by professional standards of practice to report information in certain circumstances. This could include risk of harm to a person, clinical records being subpoenaed by the courts or knowledge of a child experiencing abuse. Both the limits of confidentiality and the guidelines for sharing information will be explained and discussed during the first session.
Why would I consider therapy with a social worker?
Most registered social workers who provide counselling services in BC have a Master Degree in Social Work as well as additional training in various theraputic modalities and theories. Registered Social Workers are accountable to the BC College of Social Workers and practice by the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. Using a social work lens in therapy provides for a unique framework for clients by using a holistic, stregnths-based, anti-oppresive, systems perspective when working to address an issue together. Registered social workers in BC do not diagnose mental health concerns.

Do you provide virtual services?
Yes, although we provide many in-person sessions many people are finding that they actually prefer video counselling in the comfort of their own environment. In addition, research has shown that virtual counselling is just as effective as in-person services. As part of the initial session we will discuss your comfort in receiving services virtually and ensure you feel ready to move forward. We offer virtual counselling to anyone residing in BC.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions you need will depend on you and your goals and needs. This will be further discussed during our first session together. Generally, clients start off booking sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Olive Branch Counselling does recognize time and financial considerations are on someone's mind when they consider counselling so we aim to meet your counselling goals as efficiently and effectively as possible.
